Sono stato molto felice di incontrare il Primo ministro e voi qui a Tripoli oggi, dopo aver incontrato il Presidente del Consiglio presidenziale. Il popolo libico ha assistito a un momento storico con l’insediamento del nuovo Consiglio presidenziale e la nomina da parte della Camera dei rappresentanti del governo di unità nazionale. Volevo venire il prima possibile per trasmettere al popolo libico e alla sua nuova leadership un messaggio chiaro e forte. Ordiniamo ai vostri sforzi di riunirsi in uno spirito di unità nazionale e riconciliazione. Il futuro della Libia è nelle tue mani. Hai un’opportunità unica per costruire un paese unito, sovrano, stabile e prospero. L’UE si è impegnata, anche attraverso il processo di Berlino, a sostenere attivamente la riconciliazione nazionale. E abbiamo fornito assistenza in un’ampia gamma di settori, in particolare la governance economica e la fornitura di servizi . E ora, attraverso COVAX, di cui l’UE è il principale contributore, a brevissimo arriveranno in Libia 57.000 dosi di vaccini. Hai creato un’opportunità per ricostruire il tuo paese. Ma c’è una precondizione: tutti i combattenti e le truppe straniere devono lasciare il paese. E l’attuazione dell’accordo di cessate il fuoco e il rispetto dell’embargo sulle armi delle Nazioni Unite saranno cruciali in questo processo. Incoraggiamo tutte le istituzioni a garantire i preparativi tempestivi per le elezioni del 24 dicembre. E siamo pronti ad aumentare il nostro impegno. Ripresa economica e governance, sicurezza e stabilizzazione basate sullo Stato di diritto, diritti umani, uguaglianza di genere e ovviamente migrazione: questi sono alcuni degli ambiti in cui l’UE può portare la propria competenza. Remarks by President Charles Michel after his meeting in Tripoli with Prime Ministre Al-Dabaiba and Foreign Minister Mangoush I was very happy to meet the Prime minister and you here in Tripoli today, after meeting the President of the Presidential Council. The Libyan people have witnessed a historic moment with the installation of the new Presidential Council and the appointment by the House of Representatives of the Government of National Unity. I wanted to come as soon as possible to convey to the Libyan people and their new leadership a clear and strong message. We command your efforts to come together in a spirit of national unity and reconciliation. The future of Libya is in your hands. You have a unique opportunity to build a united, sovereign, stable and prosperous country. The EU has been engaged, also through the Berlin process, to actively support the national reconciliation. And we have provided assistance in a wide range of areas, notably economic governance and service delivery. And now, through COVAX, of which the EU is a main contributor, 57.000 doses of vaccines will very shortly be arriving in Libya. You have created an opportunity to rebuild your country. But there is one precondition: all foreign fighters and troops must leave the country. And the implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement and the respect of the UN arms embargo will be crucial in this process. We encourage all institutions to ensure timely preparations for elections on 24 of December. And we are ready to increase our engagement. Economic recovery and governance, security and stabilisation based on the Rule of law, human rights, gender equality and of course migration: these are some of the areas where the EU can bring its expertise. I shared with the Prime Minister very concrete suggestions for how the EU can practically support Libya. I was happy to meet the Prime Minister and you to better understand your ambitions and your plans. This is a moment of hope and challenges. We, the EU, stand by you and the Libyan people.
